Follow the Rio

A couple of weeks ago we took the ferry from La Paz to Mazatlán, leaving the Baja section of our travels behind. We decided on TMC ferries, the more industrial oriented company, because they let you sleep in your camper and keep your dog with you. The ferry trip in general was a smooth one, but we were sandwiched between semi trucks running their engines all night and happy to hit land in the morning. We decided not to brave busy downtown Mazatlán in the truck, and instead drove south on the toll highway and out to the coast near San Blas. We found a camp spot at a beautiful giant beach with only a few locals playing in the ocean. Rio was not disappointed with her first camping experience on the Mexican Pacific coast.

The next day we headed to Litibú, a tiny area on the coast between Sayulita and Punta Mita in Nayarit state, where Mitch’s family came to meet us for a visit. We had a fun 10 days exploring the area, hanging with family and enjoying the vacation from truck life. We found a great beginner surf spot called La Lancha, a beautiful beach with a short hike in. The Puerta Vallarta area is very busy with tourists compared to some of the other places we have been in Mexico so far, and seems to be growing rapidly. The change in climate and landscape from the Baja peninsula to the mainland was also interesting to witness. It is definitely more humid here, and much more green and jungly.

Today we began our next part of the trip, driving south along the Pacific coast. We plan to follow the coastal road, the México 200, until we cut inland somewhere in the state of Oaxaca. We hope to find lots of good surfing spots and beaches along the way. As we go south, the temperature seems to increase steadily, making us grateful for the A/C unit we had the foresight to include when we built the camper. The little things go a long way when it comes to living comfortably day to day in the camper truck!
